SA:Jury to resume in Fabian Francis trial

A jury will resume deliberations today in the wife-beating trial of former AFL footballer
FABIAN FRANCIS.

He's been charged with 20 abuse-related crimes against his former wife DEBRA BUCKSKIN
between 1998 and 2011.

Prosecutor MARK NORMAN has told the District Court, Ms BUCKSKIN endured years of abuse
at the hands of her jealous, controlling and cruel husband.

Mr NORMAN says Ms BUCKSKIN considered herself a proud Aboriginal woman who suffered
emotional terrorism.

But defence counsel DAVID STOKES says Ms BUCKSKIN abused and hit 37-year-old FRANCIS,
allegedly punching his teeth out, and fixed him up with a golf club after she suspected
him of affairs.

The jury of nine women and three men retired to consider their verdict yesterday and
resume this afternoon.

Fed: Govt to phase out incandescent lightbulbs by 2009

CANBERRA, Feb 20 AAP - The humble light bulb is about to become history as Australia
dumps it in favour of more energy efficient technology.

Federal Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull says the standard incandescent light
bulb, which has been around for 125 years, will be phased out by 2009.

It will be replaced by the compact fluorescent bulb which costs $5 more, but saves
an average of $30 a year, and is around 80 per cent more energy efficient.

Mr Turnbull said new government standards will be in place by 2009.

They do us a disservice

Type: Letter

I REFER to the letter from Prof Dr Norhashimah Jalaluddin, the Malaysian Linguistic Society president (Coordinator for 48 non- governmental organisations against PPSMI and Page), "BM is soul of the nation" (NST, April 19).

First, let me say that I am not a spokesperson for the supporters of PPSMI nor Page but I support the use of English.
When I discussed her letter with some of my friends at our surau, many were shocked at the "mood" of the letter. All of us do not agree with her.

Her letter raises some pertinent questions:

Do the "Pejuang Bahasa" (language nationalists) need to resort to extreme measures, as shown in her letter, in trying to ensure the survival of Bahasa Malaysia?

Are all Malay-speaking people naturally patriotic?

Is the Malay language under threat?

My answers are: no, to all the questions.

The professor suggested that those who ask for English to be the medium of instruction for Science and Mathematics were being unpatriotic.

Many countries use two or more languages; one, their own national language, and two, a working language that can be used commercially and internationally for business and international relations, and which is more often than not, the English language.

China, India, Pakistan, Singapore, many countries in Europe and Africa, for instance, use at least two languages and one of them is the English language. Is the professor suggesting that the citizens of these countries are also unpatriotic?

Patriotism is not just about the national language. Fighting corruption, eliminating wastage of public funds, calling for good governance, integrity, etc, are just some acts of patriotism.

The writer stated that "we wish to state again that PLM does not object to the teaching of the English language". But earlier in her letter, she had said, "PLM and its affiliates strongly condemn any suggestion to revive and re-implement the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI), be it fully or partially". Her statements are contradictory.

Historically, the English language may at one time have been considered a denigrated language, inferior to other languages of knowledge such as Arabic, Greek and Latin.

That was a very long time ago but English is now recognised as one of only very few world languages the language of international relationship, international commerce and the Internet.

And as the writer correctly stated, English has become a "dynamic" language today.

To wait for Bahasa Malaysia to be on a par with the English language will take a very long time, a hundred years perhaps as that was the period the English language took to become what it is today. In a hundred years from today, when Bahasa Malaysia attains the level where English is now, the English language would still be a hundred years ahead of our national language. We will never be able to catch up.

We have gone quite far in our efforts to get our people proficient in English, without neglecting Bahasa Malaysia, as the introduction of PPSMI since 2002 has shown. So don't stop now; let the momentum continue.

My friends and I are not against Bahasa Malaysia and we support and laud the government's efforts in promoting the language.

Those who want English to be used are only asking something that can and will make our country better and not something that will make the country go backwards.

We are definitely not glorifying the English language as mocked by the writer, but we are just being practical and realistic and for very good reasons.

We certainly are not "colonised" in our thinking and outlook. That allegation is a bit far-fetched.

Being proficient in both English and Bahasa Malaysia will not make our values as Asians and Malaysians any different from the practices, customs, cultures and beliefs of the "Pejuang Bahasa". We are all Malaysians and we are one. So, let's not go against each other.

Claiming that a press conference last year was joined by 48 Malay NGOs that represented more than 30,000 members and over 100,000 people took part in a peaceful rally to submit a memorandum to Istana Negara on March 7, 2009 against PPSMI does not mean that the majority of Malaysians support their cause.

And to say that only a small number of people support the agenda of Parent Action Group for Education (Page) is incorrect.

Many reasons have been given by many people from all walks of life, including very young schoolchildren, for the past several years in letters to the media, meetings, seminars, discussions, etc, on why we still need English.

And Malaysians sighed with relief when the prime minister and the deputy prime minister recently said that the government was taking another look at the issue. If a decision is made to retain PPSMI, then we would have continuity, which is good for all.

We, who are asking for greater use of English, are concerned about nation building, development of the country, and to ensure that the country achieves its aim to be a First World nation, a developed country and a high-income economy by 2020.

A good working knowledge of the English language will help us achieve those aims more easily.

However, we have never at any time hinted or suggested that the use of Bahasa Malaysia in national schools be curtailed.

We do not believe that being proficient in both Bahasa Malaysia and English will create different classes of people, and there's no guarantee that using just one language will not create divisions among the people.

As it is, if one observes carefully, people who only use Bahasa Malaysia are themselves already divided into classes. Greater wealth for all, eradication of poverty, increased employment opportunities, providing a better life and being bilingual are better causes in uniting our people.

The writer also said the "effort to educate the people via English is unpatriotic". Calling people who want to help young fellow citizens and future Malaysians to be better and to make sure that their needs, welfare and their future are taken care of as unpatriotic is bizarre and unfriendly.

I am one of those who fought for our country when it was threatened by communist insurgents in the 1970s, and I will not hesitate to do the same again and take up arms and fight to defend our country if it ever comes under threat again.

I am sure most Malaysians who support the use of both Bahasa Malaysia and English would do the same.

So, by going against the obvious, the writer, the Malaysian Linguistic Society (PLM) and the 48 NGOs she represents are doing a disservice to the country, especially to the young people and students throughout the country and the generations of Malaysians to come.

Malaysian turf clubs must evolve to survive
Byline: Go-Ram
Edition: Main/Lifestyle
Section: Main Section

THE advent of the Internet over the last decade has produced sophisticated Malaysian punters who can now study form, watch races and wager bets on local or international races from anywhere in the world.

And betting over the Internet has always been many, many times higher than betting at the turf clubs or off-course betting centres.
Betting with turf clubs and off-course centres are the only legal avenues for Malaysian racing fans.

But what attracts punters to the Internet is that they have a choice of viewing better class horses which compete fairly under close professional scrutiny. This trend will only accelerate. Within the next couple of years, if not sooner, it will be possible for punters to "tune in'' to any race in any part of the world and bet on it. If the choice is between putting down RM50 on a maiden race in Newmarket against a Class 5 handicap at Batu Gantong, it's not difficult to guess which one the punter will opt for. Slowly but surely a time will come when only the fittest will survive in this industry. Only those racing jurisdictions that are nimble, credible, and innovative will survive.

The Malaysian turf clubs have to decide whether they plan to compete effectively in this changing scenario or wither away.

One of the areas in which Malaysian horse racing scores abysmally low marks is in the policing of the the sport. There are just far too many "non-triers". Imagine the plight of small punters who bet their hard-earned RM10 on such horses. They don't get a run for their money.

And the reason behind the existence of these "non-triers" is the belief that some advantage, such as a drop in rating, will accrue allowing for a lucrative gamble in the future.

It's not too late and things can still be done to stop the rot but turf clubs must take stock of the situation and make the changes that will bring back the punters. Of course, betting on the Internet does not have the same atmosphere as at turf clubs. But punters need to have 100 per cent confidence in the industry as only then will they return to betting with the clubs.

Everything in the world is changing and so must the racing industry. If we cling on to outdated views, the industry will be left behind and then become extinct.

Meanwhile, Ipoh-based trainers had a successful outing over the weekend at the Perak Turf Club which was hosting the Penang Turf Club's (PNTC) January meeting when they took 11 races in a card of 16 races. with Abdul Rahim taking training honours saddling three winners with Knightrider on Saturday and Won't Stop and Golden Bearcat on Sunday.

Next was John McGillivray and Stephen Cook.

McGillivray was successful with I Need You So and Sango while Cook saddled No Money No Talk and Blue Tosca.

Luke Danis was successful with Gem Arc, Kevin Coetzee with True Friendship, Chong Keng Leong with Essentially Cool while Evert Breukelen scored with Star Ruler.

FED:Punters back coalition to form govt

CANBERRA, Aug 22 AAP - Bookies have installed the coalition as the favourite to form
government following an inconclusive result from Saturday's federal election.

Sportingbet Australia has the coalition at a $1.40, while Labor is at $2.80.

Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said it looked very hard for Labor to form
government, and punters had instantly backed the coalition to come to an agreement with
the three re-elected independent MPs.

"The coalition are a clear favourite, as it is hard to see how a Labor government relying
on support from a Green and essentially conservative independents would ever reach a consensus
and be able to function effectively," Sullivan said.

Sportingbet opened the book on Sunday with the coalition at $1.50 and instantly took
two bets of $5000 at $1.50 and $1.45.

"Assuming the coalition wins Hasluck in Western Australia, they will have 73 seats
and it will be impossible for Labor to form government without the Greens and the independents,"

Sullivan said.

Despite money being available for them .. Victorian CFA volunteers won't all have new
radios to replace the models that failed on Black Saturday for at least another two years.

Last year's budget saw almost 13 million dollars set aside over four years to upgrade
the radios that some volunteers say fail in smoke.

The CFA says it'll start rolling out the 10-thousand radios in the second half of this
year .. but the program won't be completed before June 2012.

Qld: Police forced to use old DNA evidence in Lacey case

By Christine Flatley

BRISBANE, Dec 18 AAP - Queensland police have been refused permission to gather fresh
DNA samples from two brothers facing a string of drugs charges.

Dionne Matthew Lacey, 21, and Jade Michael Lacey, 25 - sons of Gold Coast millionaire
Ken Lacey - were charged with drug trafficking in August following a year-long police
operation.

Dionne faces nine charges, including the trafficking and supply of MDMA (ecstasy) and
cannabis and possession of cocaine and the steroid methandienone.

Jade faces five charges, including trafficking MDMA, possession of cocaine and the
supply of a handgun.

Queensland police recently applied to the Brisbane Magistrates Court for permission
to take fresh DNA samples, photographs and fingerprints from the pair to use in prosecuting
the case.

However, magistrate Bronwyn Springer on Thursday refused the application.

She did, however, say current legislation would allow police to use identifying evidence
gathered from the brothers during earlier investigations relating to murder and attempted
murder charges.

Jade and his younger brother Dionne were committed in March on charges of murder and
unlawful wounding over the death of 23-year-old Kevin Palmer at a Gold Coast house party
in May 2007.

Both were also committed to stand trial in May on a string of separate charges - including
attempted murder and torture - relating to allegations they forced a man to dig his own
grave over a failed drug heist.

The pair remain in custody after making a number of failed bail applications.

Fed: Durie gone from Dancing but back in the garden

By Michael Gadd, National Entertainment Writer

SYDNEY, April 18 AAP - After his elimination from Dancing With The Stars, landscaper
and TV presenter Jamie Durie is convinced he made the right move from the Nine to the
Seven Network this year.

The judges have only recently flipped over Durie's dance floor prowess where he was
criticised for lacking subtlety and finesse as he relied too heavily on his acrobatic
background and experience as a stripper for Manpower.

But today he had already put the show behind him, labelling it a fun and challenging experience.

Now he's looking forward to his next project on the now top-rating network, Australia's
Best Backyards, which will go to air in the next month.

"It's going to be good to get back in the garden and doing what I loved to do, encouraging
people to put more plants in the ground," Durie said.

Asked if he was disappointed to miss out on the top three in Dancing With The Stars
after a dramatic episode last night, the highest rating of the season with 1.9 million
viewers, Durie said "not really".

"I'm actually pleased to have my weekends back," he said.

"I don't think people realise the commitment that's involved when you take on this
show. That's why I've declined two times before agreeing to do this series."

In reality, Durie will only get one week's break from the show with all contestants
required to return to the South Melbourne studios for the grand final on May 1.

On his move from Nine to Seven, Durie believes his timing was perfect.

He rose to fame on Nine's Backyard Blitz and other shows when it was the undisputed
No.1 network in Australia.

Now Seven is the runaway leader in the TV ratings.

"The whole network is putting a lot of passion into what they're doing and that means
great opportunities for me, I couldn't be happier where I am," he said.

Durie travels overseas every second week and has been filming around the country for
Australia's Best Backyards for the past six weeks.

But his workload is no different to the contestants remaining on the show.

Singer Kate Ceberano has recorded an album of 1980s music during the series to capitalise
on her exposure on the show while Home and Away actor Tim Campbell, the runaway favourite
with bookmakers Sportingbet to win the series, has continued his normal shooting schedule
while rehearsing for the show.

But the first contestant to show real weakness has been breakfast presenter Fifi Box.

After a fall during rehearsals Box and her partner Paul Green were heavily medicated on
painkillers during their performance last night.

A Seven spokeswoman said Box was likely to take the next two days off rehearsals to
rest her injured ankle and will make a decision later this week on whether or not she
will dance next week.

Fed: Govt hypocritical for gagging debate on immigration: Labor

CANBERRA, Aug 10 AAP - Labor has labelled the government hypocritical for gagging debate
on changes to Australia's migration laws but spending weeks negotiating the deal with
Indonesia.

The government will force the House of Representatives to vote today on the changes
which would force illegal refugees arriving by boat into offshore processing centres.

"This government spent weeks and weeks consulting with Indonesia, making sure every
Indonesian argument was heard and the prime minister can't put up with Australian members
of parliament talking for more than a day," Opposition immigration spokesman Tony Burke
said.

The changes came about after a group of Papuan refugees were granted asylum in Australia
when they reached Cape York, in far north Queensland this year.

A diplomatic rift between Australia and Indonesia opened after asylum was granted.

"It's typical of the fact the government knows these laws are weak, knows these laws
are an appeasement of another country and doesn't want the argument to be told, doesn't
want the story on the record," Mr Burke said.

Liberal Judith Troeth is one of the government members opposing the bill, but Mr Burke
said he was not sure which way she would vote.

"I am not able to give a punt on what the odds are of people voting different ways," he said.

"I'm still astonished that this bill has come before us in the first place."

Talking computers.

Provided by 7DAYS.ae

It is a sunny day by the River Main as the city of Frankfurt, GermanyCOs financial powerhouse, gets ready for a long, hot summer. But while the outside landscape is awash with colour, our hosts, Fujitsu Siemens Computers (FSC), have gone to considerable expense and effort to keep things strictly black and white.

I fail to get confirmation out of chief marketing officer Barbara SchEndler that FSC employees were instructed to dress accordingly for the event, but my suspicions linger as they, the interior design at the venue and even the waiting staff all appear to be colour-coordinated. In the press briefing prior to the trip, there had been talk of the European computer manufacturer launching a new Cydesign languageCO across all its consumer and business products. What could this puzzling term mean ; If the press corps was looking for a clue before the conference began, it was all around us - in black and white.

Essentially, what the company is looking to do is let every one of its products say CyFujitsu SiemensCO without having to actually say CyFujitsu SiemensCO on it. The joint venture company, founded in 1999, may not exactly roll off the tongue like concise rival brand names such as Dell, Acer, or even HP, so why not let the design speak for itself ;

And design does matter. People buy a mobile phone not just for the camera, the memory space or other features, but because they like the look, or even feel of it. C[pounds sterling]Our business is more turning into an emotional business,C[yen] Herbert SchE[micro]nebeck, FSCCOs senior vice president for consumer and devices, tells 7DAYS. C[pounds sterling]ThatCOs why we want to transport emotions from one corner to the other, so people can have the same kind of experience if they have any product from Fujitsu Siemens in their hands.C[yen]

One and a half years ago, FSC realised that the laptop could not be the only portable item where design didnCOt play a part - and decided to turn design into a key brand driver. Since then, C[pounds sterling]far less than one million eurosC[yen] has been spent on design development, according to SchEndler. C[pounds sterling]But when you look at the marketing activities that weCOre now going to run, then itCOs double-digit millions.C[yen]

So why black and white ; C[pounds sterling]We wanted to transport our brand values,C[yen] she adds. C[pounds sterling]WeCOre well known for high quality, so we wanted to be able to show the technology. The black piece inside reminds people that there is a lot of technology in there. But then we wanted to create some desire. We needed to make the user-interface look more user-driven and people-driven instead of technology-driven - and thatCOs the idea of the core and shell,C[yen] she adds, referring to the name FSC has given to its design.

Of course, the decision on which design to go for was not taken after a show of hands at an FSC board meeting. Three alternative CylanguagesCO were invented: one very robust, the other stylish with an emphasis on design, and a third somewhere in between. Following extensive market research across Europe, comprising 1,200 interviews, design won the day.

C[pounds sterling]Both in the north of Europe and the south of Europe, the design affinity is higher than in the centre of Europe,C[yen] explains SchEndler. Interestingly, the Latin countries preferred eyecatchers, while the Brits, Germans and Russians wanted something pure and elegant. C[pounds sterling]We then decided: if you go for a compromise, you will probably lose those markets that have a high desire for design and you wonCOt gain anything in the central part of Europe. So we said weCOre going to make a courageous step - weCOre really going to have a unique design and something that differentiates, instead of saying: CyLetCOs make half a step - we still believe that those people who are a little bit less interested in design will like it, particularly when it doesnCOt cost you that much.COC[yen]

The new design language would be a splendid idea, several members of the press thought, if only someone else hadnCOt done it first. Though FSCCOs research found that 80 per cent of its products bearing the hallmarks of the new design were recognised as the same CyfamilyCO, could the company match the uniformity of design so brilliantly achieved by Apple ;

SchE[micro]nebeck admits than AppleCOs success with its common design was C[pounds sterling]one of the factors beside othersC[yen] for FSC deciding to create a new design language, though he insists that Apple is far from his biggest enemy. C[pounds sterling]Apple is certainly a company we can learn from, as is HP... as is Acer,C[yen] he says. C[pounds sterling]We are open enough to know that we donCOt need to re-invent all the wheels a second or third time - we can look at what others have done. Apple enjoyed the success of the iPod, and theyCOve been able to transport that to the notebook and partly to the desktop business as well.C[yen]

So can the catalyst for AppleCOs blossoming do something similar for FSC, or is there a risk this binding decision could backfire ; C[pounds sterling]We know from our research that we will not be able to address everybody,C[yen] SchE[micro]nebeck concedes. C[pounds sterling]The more you are different, the more you are polarising. In the end, the idea is to cover everybody, but not with just one design and colour scheme.C[yen]

Good news then for anyone wanting more colour at their fingertips, whether a consumer or a bulk-buyer for businesses. The new FSC language will evolve, taking on additional CydialectsCO further along the line through secondary colour schemes. But first up is the Amilo 3000 consumer product line (pictured), from entry-level PC down to USB stick, which will be hitting stores in the UAE from mid-August. Take a good look... does it speak to you ;

SCREEN DREAMS: Do you care what your laptop looks like ;

Rijuraj Rajendran, 7DAYS IT manager

C[pounds sterling]I donCOt look at the design. I want a laptop to be very slim but then I would mostly go for features: speed, the latest software and wireless capability.C[yen]

Maya Kheshen, PR executive

C[pounds sterling]Of course. As Oscar Wilde said: CyIf you canCOt be a piece of art, you should wear a piece of art.CO Both design and features are important but for me, design matters more. My ideal colour would be beige.C[yen]

Dave Battiston, Air Miles

C[pounds sterling]A while ago I would have said no because functionality is key for me. But then I saw the MacBook Air, so now ICOd say yes. I like something thatCOs light but big and good-looking as well.C[yen]

Sharon Garrett, Virgin Galactic

C[pounds sterling]The RAM is most important but then design would sway it as I donCOt use all the features on a laptop. The main factors for me are the weight, an appealing look and the size of the keyboard. Ideally I would go for something silver.C[yen]
