Vic: Victorian government rules out fire tax

MELBOURNE, Feb 10 AAP - The Victorian government has ruled out introducing a fire taxto fund the massive firefighting effort in the state's north-east.

A spokesman for Victorian Emergency Services Minister Andre Haermeyer said the governmenthad no plans for a fire tax.

"The government took heed of early warnings of an impending fire season when we formedbudgets and allocated funds accordingly," the spokesman said.

He said the government had already spent millions of dollars on fighting bushfiresin Victoria's north-east this summer.

Most recently the government spent $2.6 million on securing a high-tech helitankerto assist the firefighting effort.
